CAPM vs. PMP: which certification is right for me?
The short answer
The choice depends entirely on whether you currently meet one of PMI's specific experience and education pathways for the PMP, which range from 2 to 5 years of project leadership.
The Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) is an entry-level certification. It formally validates your understanding of fundamental project management principles and terminology, but does not require past project leadership experience.
The PMP is an advanced professional certification that requires verifiable experience leading and directing projects. Candidates who already possess the requisite 24 to 60 months of experience may qualify directly for the PMP.
Reviewing PMI's current eligibility pathways will clarify which certification best aligns with your existing career history.
