Eligibility & Application
What are the PMP certification requirements?
The short answer
To earn the PMP, you need 35 hours of project management training (or an active CAPM) plus a specific amount of project leadership experience based on your education: 5 years with a high school diploma, 4 years with an associate degree, 3 years with a bachelor's, or 2 years with a GAC-accredited degree.
PMI defines four distinct pathways for PMP eligibility, requiring candidates to demonstrate a proven track record of leading and directing projects within the last 10 years.
- High School Diploma (or equivalent): Requires 60 months (5 years) of project management experience.
- Associate or Vocational Degree: Requires 48 months (4 years) of project management experience.
- Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent): Requires 36 months (3 years) of project management experience.
- GAC-Accredited Degree: Requires 24 months (2 years) of project management experience.
In addition to the experience requirement, all candidates must complete 35 contact hours of formal project management education. If you hold an active Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) certification, this 35-hour training requirement is automatically waived.
