Eligibility & Application

What counts as project management experience?

The short answer

Experience counts if you were 'leading and directing' project tasks. You do not need the title 'Project Manager.' If you drove a temporary endeavor to create a unique product, service, or result, it generally qualifies.

PMI defines a project as a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result. Routine operations, ongoing maintenance, or administrative support do not count toward this requirement.

To qualify as 'leading and directing', candidates should have experience across the typical project lifecycle: initiating, planning, executing, monitoring/controlling, and closing. The overall portfolio of experience submitted should reflect an understanding of these phases.

Common examples of valid experience include leading a software rollout, organizing a corporate event, directing a construction phase, managing a marketing campaign, or spearheading a process improvement initiative.
