Eligibility & Application

How much project leadership experience do I need?

The short answer

You need between 2 and 5 years (24 to 60 months) of experience leading and directing projects, depending entirely on your highest level of education. This experience must have been accrued within the last 10 consecutive years.

PMI evaluates experience based on your actual role in project delivery rather than strictly by job title. You must have spent the required months actively 'leading and directing' project tasks.

  • With a high school diploma or GED: 60 months
  • With an associate degree or global equivalent: 48 months
  • With a bachelor's degree or global equivalent: 36 months
  • With a PMI GAC-accredited bachelor's or master's degree: 24 months

Experience cannot overlap in PMI's calculation. If you managed two projects simultaneously during a single month, it only counts as one month of project management experience.
