How does the PMP application process work?
The short answer
You apply online via PMI.org by documenting your education, 35 contact hours, and project experience. According to PMI, reviews typically take about 5 days. Once approved, you pay the fee and can schedule your exam.
Step 1: Create an Account and Open the Application
Applications are managed at PMI.org. You can save your progress and return to the application over a 90-day period once started.
Step 2: Document Your Experience
Candidates must detail their projects: titles, organizations, dates, and a brief description of their role leading and directing the project using standard project management terminology.
Step 3: Submit and Wait
PMI typically states a 5-to-7-day review period for applications. During this time, an application may be randomly selected for an audit. If approved, candidates receive an eligibility email, submit payment, and gain a one-year window to schedule and take the exam.
